Each compound eye is made up of many small, individual visual units called ommatidia (oh-ma-TID-ee-uh). Think of an ommatidium as a single, tiny eye. A single compound eye can have anywhere from a few dozen to tens of thousands of these ommatidia! Each ommatidium has its own lens and light-sensitive cells. It collects light from a very small part of the insect's visual field, like a single pixel on a screen.

When light hits an ommatidium, the light-sensitive cells send signals to the insect's brain. The brain then takes all these individual signals from thousands of ommatidia and combines them to form a complete, mosaic-like image. This type of vision is called mosaic vision. It's not as sharp or detailed as human vision, but it's excellent at detecting movement. If even a tiny part of the image changes, the insect can quickly notice it.

This ability to detect rapid movement is incredibly important for an insect's survival. It helps them spot predators approaching or quickly locate food sources. For example, a fly can see a hand moving towards it from many different angles almost instantly, allowing it to escape before being caught. Bees use their compound eyes to navigate and find flowers, while dragonflies use them to track prey during flight.
