The Western Front was the main battleground during World War I, stretching from the North Sea to the Swiss border. Between 1914 and 1918, armies from France, Britain, Germany, and their allies fought long and deadly battles here. This region became famous for its trench warfare, where soldiers lived and fought in deep, muddy ditches for months at a time.

One of the earliest major conflicts was the Battle of the Marne in September 1914, near Paris. German forces tried to capture the French capital but were stopped by French and British troops. Historians often use letters and diaries from soldiers, such as those collected in the Imperial War Museum, to understand daily life in the trenches. After the Marne, both sides dug in, creating miles of defensive trenches. This led to a deadly stalemate, as neither side could easily break through the enemy’s lines. In 1916, two of the bloodiest battles occurred: the Battle of Verdun and the Battle of the Somme. At Verdun, French forces endured a ten-month siege by the Germans. Another major battle was Passchendaele (also called the Third Battle of Ypres) in 1917. Fought in Belgium, it was marked by heavy rain and thick mud that trapped soldiers and equipment. The aim was to break through German defenses, but gains were small and the cost in lives was enormous. Over time, the Western Front saw little change in territory, but the experience transformed warfare and left lasting scars on soldiers and societies.
