How Snakes Sense Heat Around Them

Snakes are amazing animals with special abilities. Some snakes, like pit vipers, pythons, and boas, can sense heat from other animals. They do this with special body parts called pit organs. These are small holes or pits located between the snake’s eyes and nostrils.
The pit organs help snakes “see” heat. When a warm animal, like a mouse, is nearby, it gives off infrared radiation. Infrared radiation is a type of energy that we cannot see with our eyes, but we can sometimes feel it as heat. The pit organs can detect this heat energy, even in complete darkness.
Inside the pit organs, there are tiny sensors that react when they sense warmth. These sensors send signals to the snake’s brain. The brain then creates a heat “picture” of what is around the snake. This helps the snake find warm-blooded prey, like mice and birds, even at night or when hidden under leaves.
Snakes use their heat sensing to hunt more successfully. For example, a rattlesnake can strike at a mouse even if it cannot see it, just by sensing its body heat. This adaptation makes snakes excellent hunters and helps them survive in the wild.
People have learned from snakes and designed special thermal cameras that can “see” heat. Firefighters use these cameras to find people in smoke-filled buildings. This is an example of using animal adaptations to create helpful technology for humans!
Interesting Fact: Some snakes can sense temperature differences as small as 0.003°C, which is much more sensitive than humans!
