Earlier references to zero appear in the mathematical work "Brahmasphutasiddhanta" written by the mathematician Brahmagupta in 628 CE. Brahmagupta described zero as both a placeholder and a number that could be used in calculations, making it possible to perform addition, subtraction, and even negative numbers more easily.
