4 Performance Expectations Your Students Need to Master

Every resource on this page is aligned to the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) for 4th grade Earth and space science.

4-ESS1-1

Earth's Changing Surface

Identify evidence from patterns in rock formations and fossils in rock layers to support an explanation for changes in a landscape over time.

4-ESS2-1

Weathering and Erosion

Make observations and/or measurements to provide evidence of the effects of weathering or the rate of erosion by water, ice, wind, or vegetation.

4-ESS2-2

Mapping Earth's Features

Analyze and interpret data from maps to describe patterns of Earth's features.

4-ESS3-2

Natural Hazards

Generate and compare multiple solutions to reduce the impacts of natural Earth processes on humans.

What Do 4th Graders Learn in Earth and Space Science?

In fourth grade, students explore Earth's systems through the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), studying how maps reveal patterns in Earth's features, how weathering and erosion shape the land, and how fossils and rock layers tell the story of Earth's past.

The 4-ESS standards ask students to investigate four big ideas: using maps to identify patterns in Earth's features, explaining weathering and erosion through observations, reading rock layers and fossils as evidence of Earth's history, and designing solutions to reduce the impacts of natural hazards.

At Workybooks, we've built this complete Earth and space science unit around NGSS performance expectations 4-ESS1-1, 4-ESS2-1, 4-ESS2-2, and 4-ESS3-2. Each topic includes a standards-aligned reading passage at the right Lexile level for 4th graders, plus worksheets, activities, and anchor charts.
